El puente de Alcántara se levanta sobre el rio Tajo a su paso por Toledo. Se encuentra situado a los pies del Castillo de San Servando y tiene constancia de su construcción en la época romana. Era una de las entradas oficiales a la ciudad, y durante el Medievo, era entrada obligada para todo peregrino.
Bajo el reinado de Alfonso X sufrió graves desperfectos y fue reconstruido. A este último período pertenece el Torreón occidental. Este fue modificado y decorado bajo el reinado de los Reyes Católicos, cuyas armas decoran sus muros.
El torreón oriental fue reemplazado por un arco triunfal barroco en 1721, dado su estado ruinoso.
Es declarado Monumento Nacional en 1921.
